Frequently asked questions.
I am considering therapy but I am not sure what therapy is right for me, can I discuss this before making an initial appointment?
Of course. I recognise that deciding to start therapy is a big and brave step. I am happy to discuss the difficulties you are facing and if CBT or EMDR would be able to help you. If I feel CBT or EMDR is not the best therapy for you I will say and direct you to the right therapy and therapist to help you
How do I choose between CBT and EMDR?
We will decide together. If you choose to work with me, we will discuss your symptoms and what treatment would look if you choose EMDR or CBT. Many patients will receive a course of EMDR or CBT, however some patients will benefit from a mixture of the two.
How many sessions will I need?
I am aware that when people come to see me they are experiencing significant distress with their lives being disrupted by unpleasant symptoms and therefore I strive to ensure that each therapy session is as productive as it can be and that therapy is completed in as few sessions as possible.
CBT and EMDR are both short term therapies in comparison too many other types of therapy, most people will have between 6 and 16 sessions with the average patient seeing me for eight sessions.
It is hard to suggest how many sessions of EMDR you may need. For some people this may be as few as 2-4 sessions, whilst for complex or developmental trauma it could take many more sessions. NICE guidelines recommend between 8 to 12 sessions for the treatment of PTSD but acknowledge this may be much longer for people who have experienced complex trauma involving multiple events.
How often should I have sessions?
I would recommend that whenever possible therapy is undertaken on a weekly basis, however when this is not possible due to work or family commitments session should be as regular as possible.
Where do you deliver therapy and what times are you available?
On the days I work I offer appointments between 8am and 8pm in Exeter, Torbay or online. I will always offer therapy as quickly as I can but there is sometimes a short waiting list for early morning or evening appointments .
I would like to be seen face to face but at times I work away from home. Can I have a combination of face to face and virtual therapy?
Yes, I often have patients in this situation and I always strive to be as flexible as I can to accommodate patients work and other commitments.
Can I refer myself for therapy or do I need to be referred ?
Most people who come to see me refer themselves. However I also take referrals from GP’s, psychiatrists and other health professionals , solicitors, and HR departments. I am always happy to discuss potential referrals.
Do you offer EMDR Consultation and Supervision ?
Yes, I currently run EMDR supervision groups for a number of NHS Trusts as well as providing EMDR facilitation for a number of EMDR training providers. I have had experience is supervising EMDR from those who are still training in EMDR through to those working towards becoming EMDR practitioners and Consultants. I am happy to discuss your supervision needs.
